A User’s Outlook:
Moving Beyond A Commercial Perspective of Building Information Modelling (BIM)

Living in times when megatrends shape the world, communities must understand that our jobs and living spaces will be altered too, and the construction industry is not an exemption.  Professionals must adapt to new changes, such as BIM, to survive and move forward. Despite much has been written about BIM’s benefits for practitioners and the construction industry, not much has been said about its limitations. Is it as good as we hear?
Consequently, this research aims to understand the experience of three disciplines of practitioners accountable for fundamental and central roles in the construction industry, such as architects, engineers and project managers, and why they would require BIM’s assistance. Additionally, looking at the available literature that provides varied perspectives on BIM from a different research range, including history of digital design, technical and digital handbooks, and a commercial perspective, the paper builds its arguments on BIM’s potentially harmful influence on creativity and the change in the traditional patriarchal relationship between practitioners, as well as endangering some of the jobs.
