A Walking Tour of Pinheiros, São Paulo: The Forces Exacerbating and Alleviating Urban Inequality in the City of Extremes

My project is staged in the global South metropolis of São Paulo, Brazil. This city is known as an urban case study in the domains of urban inequality and social stratification, often labelled as the ‘city of extremes’. While the city is often studied as a whole, several neighbourhoods introduce different points of views in the world of urban geography. My project focuses on the western district of Pinheiros and its trendy neighbourhood of Vila Madalena. Through its Bohemian, artistic character, the area uncovers different theories of urban geography such as verticalization, gentrification and identifiers of the creative city. My dissertation is structured as a walking tour of Pinheiros, taking visitors across three sections of the area, discussing the following:
  1. Pinheiros: The Three-Dimensional City(Verticalization, Social Stratification)
  2. Rua Harmônia: Gentrification and Urban Inequality
  3. Beco de Batman (Graffiti street): The Creative City

The map underneath contains three stops for each section of the tour, where the text is accompanied by a screenshot of the street view at this spot, like in my dissertation. It is meant to provide a summary of the ideas presented in the full piece.
